Case Study on a Project done by Avantha

Benefit Index (BIX)

Client Introduction: Hewitt Associates LLC the world's largest provider of multi-service HR business process outsourcing (BPO), and the only firm fully integrating HR outsourcing and HR consulting.

Project Overview: Benefit Index® is the flexible reference that measures the value and competitiveness of your company's total benefits program—no matter where you're doing business. Backed by current data and actuarial methods, Benefit Index ensures that you understand the relative value of all your company's major benefits, including health care, retirement, disability, death, and paid time off.

Avantha Technologies Ltd. was entrusted with the migration feasibility study and reviewing the impact of the migration. The client's satisfied response provided the go-ahead for the actual migration of the current package from Informix database to DB2 database. The project included the Converting, Upgrading and Migrating the BIX and BIX manager applications (17 modules) from the Informix to IBM-DB2 database and also converts the inline queries within the application from the Informix to DB2 database. The ownership of the entire effort was entrusted upon the Avantha Team.

Challenges: The Challenges of the migration include:

  • Steep timelines

  • Coordination with the teams located at different locations(Offshore and onshore)
  • Behavioral differences between Informix and DB2 database.
  • Implementation of security was required to be incorporated in the site and the same was to be implemented based on the study conducted. In addition to that additional firewalls were to be brought in place to mitigate the same. A separate study was conducted on the feasibility of mirroring the setup at the off shore partner’s end.
  • As the BIX application was a live and running application any possible change from the client used to have adverse impact on business requirement which in turn would impact the project heath.
